Parallel 13 Designs today opened pre-orders for No. 13 — The Standard Hoodie, the brand's inaugural illuminated apparel release and the first production garment to use fully removable electroluminescent (EL) wire technology engineered for daily wear. Pre-orders are capped at 500 units and are expected to close before ship date. The hoodie retails at $99.99 and ships Fall 2026.
Unlike existing light-up apparel, which is built around battery-heavy, non-washable assemblies aimed at the novelty and costume market, the Standard Hoodie integrates a thin, flexible EL wire system that slides out through a hidden zippered channel for laundering. The shell, a 400gsm cotton-polyester fleece, is designed to be washed, tumbled, and worn like any premium hoodie once the light module is removed.
"We kept getting asked the same question for years at our parent company, Ellumiglow — can you put this into clothing people would actually wear every day?" said the founder of Parallel 13 Designs. "The honest answer was no, not until the engineering caught up. The Standard Hoodie is the first time that answer changed."
Built from Proven Technology
The illumination system is based on technology developed by Ellumiglow, a specialty lighting manufacturer supplying EL and LED systems to architects, set designers, and OEM customers since 2014. The Standard Hoodie uses Ellumiglow's VynEL Flex panel technology, the same material found in professional lighting applications, reformatted as a sewable thread that runs along a vertical chest channel.
A USB-C rechargeable battery pack delivers 8 to 12 hours of runtime depending on light mode, and an inline controller offers four modes: steady, slow pulse, fast pulse, and off. The light is rated as street-visible from approximately 500 feet at night and is designed to be subtle but unmistakable in daylight.
