From DIY to high-tech: the evolution of light-integrated clothing.

Illuminated apparel didn't start in a Silicon Valley lab. It started in a Burning Man workshop at 3 AM, wired together with solder, zip ties, and rave-era EL wire. The current premium category is standing on twenty years of makers, hobbyists, and three generations of commercial attempts that mostly failed. Here's the lineage — and what each era taught the next one.

Why this history matters

The premium illuminated apparel you can buy today didn't arrive fully formed. It's the product of a long, messy evolution — hobbyist communities pushing what was possible, early commercial entrants learning hard lessons in public, and enough generations of failure that the current wave of brands could skip most of the mistakes.

Understanding that history tells you something useful as a buyer: it tells you which problems have actually been solved and which ones the category is still working on. Brands claiming breakthroughs that were actually figured out in 2008 are either unaware or hoping you are.

Here are the five eras of light-integrated clothing, the makers who defined each, and what each left behind for the next.

The five eras

Era 01 · 1995-2005

EL Wire and the Rave Pioneers

Electroluminescent wire had existed in industrial applications since the 1960s — runway lighting, aircraft interiors, control panel illumination. In the mid-1990s, it escaped into club culture. The UK rave scene, then the US, then Burning Man, started weaving it into clothing. Warped Tour t-shirts with EL wire logos. Tron-style outfits at festivals. Duct-taped 9V inverters stuffed into jacket pockets.

The technology was cheap, available at electronics surplus shops, and totally impractical. Wire broke. Inverters died. Batteries lasted 90 minutes. Nothing was waterproof. You couldn't wash anything. But the visual vocabulary of "lit clothing" was established here, and it spread from subculture to subculture.

What it left behind The aesthetic template. Every later wave of illuminated apparel references this era visually, even when the technology is completely different.
Era 02 · 2005-2012

The Maker Movement Takes Over

The mid-2000s brought Adafruit, SparkFun, and Instructables. Leah Buechley's LilyPad Arduino arrived in 2007 — a sewable microcontroller that gave DIY makers programmable control over LED patterns on clothing. Suddenly you could put a pattern on a garment that responded to motion, sound, or heart rate. Makers at Burning Man were building jackets that mapped sound to color. Fashion tech workshops proliferated. Sewable LEDs, conductive thread, and flexible batteries entered the hobbyist supply chain.

This era pushed the intellectual frontier — what could theoretically be built into a garment. The best projects were remarkable. But they were still one-offs, and they still didn't survive a washing machine.

What it left behind Programmable, responsive lighting as a design concept. The technical vocabulary of "wearable computing" took root here.
Era 03 · 2012-2017

Kickstarter and the First Commercial Wave

Crowdfunding met wearable tech. Between 2012 and 2016, dozens of illuminated apparel startups ran successful Kickstarter campaigns — light-up jackets, glowing shoes, programmable backpacks. Most raised six-figure sums. Most shipped poorly or not at all. The backlog of disappointed backers from that era is still visible on archived campaign pages.

The fundamental problem: moving from prototype to production is hard for any product, but especially hard for wearable electronics. The Kickstarter companies had compelling demos and couldn't reliably manufacture them. Battery life was worse than promised. Electronics failed at scale. Warranty claims buried small teams. By 2017, most of these brands were either dead, privately pivoted, or limping along as mailing lists without products.

A few survived and became the category's first real brands. Most didn't. The lesson in public was brutal but valuable: the engineering is the hard part, not the concept.

What it left behind A clear understanding of which engineering problems are actually hard: washability, battery durability, supply chain quality control, long-term warranty support.
The Kickstarter era's real contribution wasn't the products. It was documenting, in public, every way illuminated apparel can fail — and making sure the next generation of brands had to solve those problems before shipping.
Era 04 · 2017-2023

Niche Specialists and Industrial Quality

The Kickstarter hangover pushed illuminated apparel into narrower lanes. Consumer fashion mostly retreated from the category. What survived were specialist brands solving specific problems: Noxgear for runners, Proviz for cyclists, Lumos for urban commute, and a handful of industrial safety apparel makers building illuminated hi-vis for serious workplaces.

These brands operated outside the fashion spotlight, but they were doing the real engineering work. Runtime improved. Durability got tested at scale. Battery systems standardized. The foundational R&D for premium daily-wear illuminated apparel happened during this period, mostly in functional categories that didn't care about looking like fashion.

At the same time, specialty lighting companies like Ellumiglow continued to develop the underlying EL and LED technologies for industrial, architectural, and stage applications — building the supply of high-quality EL panels and flexible LED systems that the next era would need.

What it left behind Mature, tested, scalable supply chains for the underlying lighting components. Engineering standards that premium fashion brands could inherit rather than develop from scratch.
Era 05 · 2024-present

The Premium Fashion Wave

We're in it now. The premium illuminated apparel market — pieces designed for daily wear, built on tested engineering, priced as real fashion — launched commercially around 2024 and is currently in its early mainstream phase. Brands like Parallel 13 (us, hi), along with a growing number of direct-to-consumer startups, technical apparel labels, and luxury collaborators, are shipping pieces that actually work.

What's different this time: the engineering has been done. The EL and LED systems are supplied by companies with decades of industrial application experience. The batteries are standardized USB-C power banks. The controllers are based on well-understood circuit designs. The fabrics and construction are borrowed from the technical outerwear playbook.

The innovation happening now is in integration, aesthetic, and user experience — not in the underlying technology. That's a healthier place for a category to be. It means the pieces shipping can actually deliver on what they promise, because nobody is still figuring out how to make the core technology work.

What it's leaving behind The first generation of illuminated apparel that can be owned and worn like any other premium garment. The infrastructure for a real category — not a subculture, not a novelty, not a Kickstarter.

What each era teaches the buyer

Knowing the history helps you evaluate what's on the market today. A few pattern-recognition shortcuts:

If a brand's pitch sounds like Era 03

"Revolutionary new LED technology." "Never-before-seen programmable patterns." "Break-the-rules illuminated apparel." These are the marketing notes of the Kickstarter era, and they're warning signs. Real category progress is incremental now. A brand promising a breakthrough is either overselling or still learning the problems the last generation already solved.

If a brand is transparent about its supply chain

Brands partnering with established lighting technology manufacturers (Ellumiglow, and a handful of others globally) are buying into mature supply chains. That's a positive signal — they're not trying to invent the technology, they're applying it. The pitch is about the garment, the design, and the ownership experience, not about the invention of the light system.

If a brand offers real repair and warranty

The single clearest inheritance from the Kickstarter era's failures: if a brand won't stand behind the electronics for at least a year, they either haven't built their product to last that long or they don't have the operational infrastructure to support it. Either way, it's not a brand that learned from the history.

If a brand still ships things you can't wash

We're twenty years past the Era 01 DIY scene. Any illuminated apparel being sold in 2026 that requires you to throw it away when it gets dirty is either Era 01 quality at premium pricing, or a brand that hasn't invested in solving the hardest problem in the category. Washability isn't a feature. It's the baseline.

Where we sit

Parallel 13 is explicitly an Era 05 company. We're not inventing the technology — we're applying a decade-plus of lighting engineering work from our parent company, Ellumiglow, to the specific problem of making clothing you can actually wear every day. What we're trying to add isn't technology. It's taste, durability, and long-term ownership support. A hoodie you buy today should still work, look good, and be repairable five years from now. That's not possible if you're also trying to invent the light system at the same time. It's possible when you inherit a mature tech stack and focus on everything else.

Two decades of makers, hobbyists, and failed startups got us here. The current wave of brands is the first generation that can actually deliver on what the category has been promising since 1997.
